Joby & Thomas

Following the river Exe

Their story, in their words…

The Exe river walk we completed in 3 days. When we arrived in Exeter we were feeling probably a bit too confident but that was probably the worst mistake we could make.

Day 1 we left Exeter train station at midday and we strolled at a good pace however day 1 was the easiest it was the nicest as we got to look around the great views it had absorbing all the nature before we inevitably found it to be a blur.

After packing up our tent on day 1 the back pain started kicking in but that wasn’t the worst of it, I would walk the rest of the hike with blisters and eventually scabs but Thomas being more prepared avoided those issues.

Day 2 we stopped for 10-20 mins for lunch and apart from the hills it more wore us out, playing card games in the tent as it poured down on us was definitely the highlight of the day.

Day 3 would be the utter worst but felt like we had achieved the most. We got up much earlier than the day before as we were planning to walk up 700m over 25km to the source, with heels burning we marched on till we couldn’t feel our feet and eventually we made it just a few meters away from the source.

Thomas enjoys going on hikes for the views and it’s definitely what he got, the most memorable moment for me was when we saw a sheep which had been cut off from its pack, a close second would be staring down the horns of a bull while we tried to go around them as they blocked the gate on our route.

Although I thought I was going to collapse by the end of it I think we both agreed that it was a fun time and certainly not something I could ever experience again.
