Long-distance cycle

Their story, in their words…

For the cycling trip, we had many difficulties of which we had to innovate and adapt to the challenges that were brought about. The first day brought about the difficulty of waking up at 4 am to meet up on top of shooters hill to start our journey. This was not too bad due to previous practice and experience.

After this we cycled for 4 hours to Rochester, we took a break for 1 hour and ate some food to help with the rest of the journey. Later we cycled for another 3 hours to Maidstone, to which another difficulty arose which was the rain started to pour heavier and this directly caused the minor crash of two members of the trip, which were Calin and Haydn. We adapted to this situation by using the medical aid kit that Kajetan had prepared prior to the trip.

We then took another 1-hour break to recuperate and see if the injury got worse. We then cycled for another 7 hours to Ashford where the first campsite was. We then set up camp for the night and cooked some of the burgers we had bought from M&S and then went to sleep.

The next day we woke up at 9 am and took about 2 hours to prepare to leave the campsite for the next one which was around 45 miles away, so we had about 9 hours to get to the second campsite in Battle. The second day was like the first in the way it was uphill, so it was more exhausting, but we pushed through and made it to the campsite at 9 pm. We then set up camp and made chicken for dinner.

The next two days were uneventful and went according to plan as more experience and skill were used, which overall helped us to not have as many accidents as the first two days. We bought fruit and vegetables throughout the journey to refuel on energy and ate high carbs in the afternoon to satiate ourselves until later the next days.

Collectively, we thought that this trip helped to build teamwork skills and also communication as well as leadership as at times all of us contributed key parts to the journey which impacted the journey significantly as a whole.
