Hadrian's Wall

Their story, in their words….

Starting on the 8th of August to the 13th we traveled to Newcastle upon-Tyne and completed a 65-mile hike along Hadrian’s Wall, stopping at hostels and B&Bs along the way. We carried all the food we were to eat (3 meals a day + snacks) on our backs and everything else we needed the whole walk.

The route we hiked was fairly clear and we managed to navigate with a Hadrian’s Wall map book well, and the path was mostly over small mountains that went up and down with the wall. Day 1 was our least favorite day as it was mostly just through Newcastle and on a river path, but by day 2 we were into fields and hills. Day 3,4 and 5 had the most beautiful views from the tops of the mountains, however they were definitely the most difficult days physically, and by the end of each day we both had a lot of pain in our legs and knees, making the walking harder as we went on, which was the biggest challenge for us.

Despite the physical difficulties, the incredible views definitely made it worth it. We also met plenty of kind and interesting people along the hike, walking with some of them and having conversations. The main things we both feel we got out of it were not only the social skills we had to use for organizing all the accommodation, as most of the bookings had to be over the phone, but also the resilience and tenacity it took to keep going, as after about the second day we were in a lot of pain and would have happily stopped, but we chose to keep going and it was definitely worth it.
