Their story, in their words…
Thanks to the support of the Mark Evison Foundation, we successfully carried out our project, “3 Bakers, 3 Hours, 3 Treats”. Our aim was to promote healthier eating habits among younger children by creating delicious baked treats using more nutritious ingredients and healthier alternatives to refined sugar.
Working as a team of six students, we planned, budgeted for and baked a range of healthy products before selling them to members of the local community and pupils at Earlsmead Primary School. In total, we produced approximately 160 treats and generated a profit! The project was a great success. Our most popular product was the sweet potato cupcake, which sold out completely and was also chosen by our judging panel as the overall winning treat. The banana cookies were the second most popular item and sold out after we continued sales by going door-to-door on our respective streets. The sweet potato brownies were also very well received and generated positive feedback from customers.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was seeing people enjoy healthier alternatives to traditional sugary snacks. Many children were unable to identify any difference between our treats and traditional baked goods based on appearance alone. Even after learning about the healthier ingredients used, they were still willing to try the products and responded positively, helping us achieve our aim of promoting healthy eating in a fun and engaging way.
Throughout the project, we developed valuable skills including budgeting, teamwork, communication, organisation, and problem-solving. We also gained confidence through planning the event, interacting with customers, and managing the bake sale.
Overall, the project exceeded our expectations and demonstrated that healthy food can be both appealing and enjoyable. We are grateful to the Mark Evison Foundation for making this opportunity possible and helping us create a positive impact within our community.
