Northumb-erland Coastal path

Their story, in their words…

As a group of five, we chose to take on the Northumberland Coastal Path as our Mark Evison Challenge. Although we had spent months carefully planning every stage of the journey, from our daily route and food supplies to our equipment and campsites, we still felt nervous in the days leading up to the hike. We constantly questioned whether we had packed everything we needed and whether we had prepared enough for the physical and mental challenge ahead. Despite these worries, we were excited to push ourselves outside our comfort zones and experience something completely different from our everyday lives.

Our journey began late at night as we met at Finchley Road to catch our coach to Newcastle upon Tyne. With very little sleep, we arrived knowing we still had 12 miles to hike on our first day. Although we were tired, the excitement of finally starting the challenge quickly replaced our nerves. Coming from London, we were amazed by the peaceful scenery and open coastline. Not only that, but we were also surprised by how friendly everyone was. It was like being accepted into a family. Every morning along our hike, we were greeted with smiles, cheerful “good mornings,” and “how’s your day?” Experiencing that was amazing and made it even harder to say goodbye to Newcastle on our way back. Being in Newcastle felt like stepping into a completely different world, and the natural surroundings motivated us to keep going despite our fatigue.

Throughout the hike, we faced many challenges, including sore muscles, blisters, steep climbs along sand dunes filled with swarming insects, and very hot weather. However, every obstacle brought us closer together as a team. We had many moments of laughter and many moments of real connection. We had funny moments that are unforgettable, for example, staying up late to explore our campsite in the dark with only a flashlight and no sense of navigation of the campsite, saying hello to sheep and cows at the crack of dawn, and the time we attempted to make “tasty” tuna pasta. Moments like those might seem ordinary to other people, but to us, I know we’ll look back on them and smile.

We encouraged one another during difficult moments, shared responsibilities, and celebrated every milestone we reached. With every mile we passed, we knew we were getting closer to the finish line, and that is something we can proudly say we accomplished. The experience taught us that determination, communication, and teamwork are just as important as physical strength. Breaking the journey into smaller goals helped us stay motivated and reminded us that every step brought us closer to completing our challenge.

Looking back, the Mark Evison Challenge has been one of the most rewarding experiences we have ever taken part in. It has given us greater confidence in our own abilities and shown us what can be achieved through careful planning, resilience, and supporting one another. We returned home not only with a sense of achievement but also with lifelong memories, stronger friendships, and a new appreciation for the outdoors. The challenge proved that we are capable of much more than we initially believed, and it is an experience that will stay with us for years to come. As a group, we can confidently say that we made it and that we are capable of anything and everything.
