
Their story, in their words…
For my technical project, I designed and made an adaptive grip glove exoskeleton to help people with reduced hand strength and mobility. Before beginning the final model, I created a simple prototype using a cardboard hand, paper straws and string to test how the tendon mechanism would work. I then learnt how to use Autodesk Fusion to design the components, which were 3D printed using PETG filament. I also taught myself Arduino programming and circuit assembly to control the servo motor which was responsible for pulling the tendons.
The project presented some challenges, particularly when I had initially caused my Arduino to burn out by incorrectly connecting the power supply from the 6V battery pack. Although this was frustrating, I learnt from my mistake and redesigned the circuit using 3-lever WAGO connectors to safely distribute the power. I also had to adjust the tendon lengths for each finger to ensure that the hand would close effectively. After iterative testing and a few modifications, I successfully assembled the final prototype, with the electronics securely mounted and the remaining components placed in a pouch on my tricep.
I was thrilled with the outcome, particularly seeing the mechanism successfully grip and hold objects without requiring any force from my fingers. The project was also highly rewarding because it allowed me to apply my interest in mechanical engineering to a practical problem which could potentially benefit others.
Most importantly, I gained valuable experience in CAD design, 3D printing, Arduino programming, problem-solving, project management and iterative testing. I also learnt the importance of learning from failures and refining a design rather than expecting the first attempt to work perfectly. Alongside the technical skills I had developed, I was proud to raise more than double my fundraising target for the Mark Evison Foundation and to contribute to raising awareness for the challenges faced by people with reduced hand mobility.
