Their story, in their words…
Through taking part in the Mark Evison Foundation, we were able to further explore our creative abilities and challenge ourselves with creating a mini puppet movie from scratch.
We based the script around a popular and well known fairy tail – the three little pigs but with a twist where one of the pigs was a wolf in disguise. We drew inspiration from the likes of Wes Anderson and their adaptation of fantastic Mr.Fox. We created our puppets out of clay and used sticks and string in order to move them around and made wooden houses for the set.
Overall the puppet movie worked out great, we were able to get the materials quickly and start on time with our schedule. Creating the puppets was a relaxing process and allowed us to showcase our artistic abilities, each puppet looks quite different from each other despite being pigs, which further shows the diversity in creative visions and each pig visually represents our distinct art styles.
Filming went smoothly but was a long process as we used both close up and long shots. After finishing the movie, we felt proud of our accomplishment and surprised at our efforts as each team member was really focused and serious about the project and put their all into it.
We were able to further enhance our team working skills as a lot of clear communication was needed in order to ensure we were all on the same page and able to work together cohesively. We also allowed each other to voice their opinion and take on ideas which made sure that no one was left out or doing less work.
Through filming the puppet show we learnt a lot about set production through prior research and hands on experience, we learnt the importance of lighting and camera angles which can allow us to have a better understanding for future projects.
Through organising the budget, timeline and equipment, we were able to improve our organisation skills as we have learnt that it is important to plan out many details in order to be completely prepared, this will be important and helpful for when we go to university.
Through solving problems that occurred, we were able to develop our analytical skills and time management as we needed to stay on top of the schedule and have back up plans; such as having two cameras, having extra clay to work with in cases of mistakes and trying multiple ways to get the puppets to stay up straight, we solved that issue with blue-tack.
Not only did the puppet show project help build us transferable skills, it also allowed for a fun and challenging project with friends that will be memorable.
