Brecon Beacons Hike

Their story, in their words…

Completing this hike was very rewarding, the 5 days that we were out in Brecon beacons was one of the most challenging things that most of us have done.

On our first day we set off not knowing what to expect, our first challenge began immediately as we started on a hill, but when we finally reached the top after what felt like hours  we knew we could finish. We arrived at our first campsite at around 8pm – we collapsed at soon as we got there and refused to move until we were hungry enough to start making dinner. The most challenging part of our first day was definitely having to walk in the dark, but it was worth it when we reached the campsite. Sleeping in the tents was better than any of us had thought, our sleeping bags were warm and comforting every day after we had hiked, especially after the second day; we hiked up ‘The cats back’ also known as black hill. The hill got steeper and steeper the more we walked, but the view we had was amazing, surrounded by flowers, sheep and horses, and once we reached the top we could see the top of all the hills in the area, as well as our campsite which seemed so small now. This hike was definitely our favourite, we didn’t have to rush up the hill and back down so we could really enjoy the hike and our surroundings.

Our least favourite day was probably day 4. It was our longest hike and we faced a fear of a lot of us in the group – cows. One of our trails went right through a cow field where there were around 30 cows some grown and some young, and as soon as we entered the field they wouldn’t take their eyes off us. One of the young cows even ran at us but stopped as it got too close (wethink they thought we might have had food for them). Going through that field was very terrifying, even worse than when one of our teammates were chased through a field by a horse in the first day.

Over all our hike was amazing, we were able to push ourselves to do somthing we never thought we could do, or even have the opportunity to do. Thank you Mark Evison for giving us the ability to complete this challenge, we now have a taste for this lind of stuff, and we will definitely be doing it again.
