Hike, Camp & Fish in Lake Ullswater

Their story, in their words…

Our group consisting of 6 members hiked from Penrith to Lake Ullswater in the lake district and hiked around Lake Ullswater itself.

The hike from Penrith to Ullswater was grueling and strenuous, taking a massive amount of effort and energy out of each one of us. The journey took approximately 4 hours and consisted of multiple breaks for us to catch up and relax. The first hike was challenging due to the large amount of equipment we had to carry and the ever transforming terrain that constantly changed in front of us but we were rewarded once we arrived at the lake and settled down in front of the beautiful scenic view of the misty mountains and the glistening reflection of the lake. After the first hike having gone extremely successful we settled up camp and began fishing. Between the 4 days and 3 nights our group caught 3 perch all ranging in sizes between 2-4 pounds.

On the third day, we began the hike from our campsite to the top of Place Fell(657 meters). The hike up the mountain seemed endless and fatiguing. James and Fabian split off halfway up because it was getting late and we needed to ensure we had a safe place to stay for the night. As we climbed the mountain became steeper and rockier. Luckily we all were wearing proper footwear and correctly kept on following our planned route on the OS map, eventually leading to the top where the view made up for the whole lengthy hike. Coming down was easier and efficient, making good haste to get back to camp on time and cook dinner. All of the hikes were draining and challenging, constantly making us push our boundaries and ourselves but the success of achieving such a task was extremely rewarding and also enjoyable to be doing it with an amazing group of friends.

As a group one important skill that we gained from Hiking around Ullswater was communication. The importance of communication was key for us since we needed to keep everyone updated on basic information like our distance to our destination, how long the journey would take and the route to our destination. Each of us had to have clear and consistent communication in order to hike around Lake Ullswater and Place Fell. A physical attribute that we all gained was endurance. We had to constantly push ourselves and move beyond boundaries that make us uncomfortable in order to get to our destination and achieve our goal.
