Their story, in their words…
For our Mark Evison Challenge we chose to travel to the Brecon Beacons in South Wales to complete 4 challenging hikes across forests, mountains and waterfalls. We created our own routes as the suggested options were inaccessible, so we ended up talking to lots of locals to find the best way to get from the closest town which was around 5 miles away.
Overall we summited 3 mountains, including Fan Nedd at 2000 ft, as well as seeing 10 waterfalls in 1 day. We also visited small towns such as Ystradfellte and came across many sheep on our roads and paths throughout our 6 days in Wales. Not only did we experience beautiful views all week, we improved our problem solving by route mapping and preparing meals with minimal equipment in isolated conditions.
On one day we created a large fire for jacket potatoes despite a lack of dead wood available, overcoming the challenge and having a tasty dinner. Whilst some moments were difficult, the challenge of being away from home and attempting some of the most physically demanding activities of our lives while having little experience in this environment, the trip was extremely rewarding by the end.
We continuously worked as a team throughout to motivate us to keep hiking up mountains, singing whilst visiting old Roman monuments and walking through valleys to keep spirits high. This was a once in a lifetime experience that has created a renewed interest in hiking and camping for all of us, and we hope to continue our adventures started by Mark Evison
