Their story, in their words…
For our Mark Evison Project we climbed UK’s tallest mountain, Ben Nevis.
On Monday 29th May, we took an overnight coach and train to get to Fort William, where we camped for 4 days. We climbed up Ben Nevis on our second day when it was quite hot and there was no need for coats. Starting at 10am, we arrived back at 9pm, so a total of an 11 hour trip. We stopped for lunch half way up at the steall falls near the source, where we drank some of the water as it was fresh. We also had to climb up parts that were covered in snow which was quite difficult. We finally reached to summit at around 5pm; the view was amazing and we stood at the top of the summit rock. We stayed at the top to take in the view and then had to begin our descent. The snow covered path on the way down was very fun because we had to slide down and was very cooling in the hot sun. Although it took around 6 hours and 30 minutes to ascend, it was only 4 hours to descend. We were very grateful to get back to our tent and were exhausted.
The next day, we went in the River Nevis, walking down it into deep water to swim in, it was very cold but refreshing on a hot day. We saw some of the steall falls along our walk. We also cooked on our portable stove on the days we were camping, making breakfast porridge, eggs and noodles, and pasta for dinner. The last day we had to pack up and head to Fort William and explored the area for a while. We then had to take another train and coach back to London.
We all felt really proud about our achievement and accomplished that we reached the summit. It was a great opportunity and we learned a lot about teamwork, responsibility and organisation.
