Their story, in their words…
We created an animated short about an art thief attempting to steal an art piece, getting chased, and realising that they stole a dummy art piece while being backed by the song “All I want” by the Offspring.
How did it work out? The challenge’s result was mixed. A fatal flaw in our thinking was we did not expect animating to take as long. Compounding that there were originally 3 members, but one of them had to drop out just before we began animating. The end result looked rushed, with inconsistent quality, and it fell short of being at least 1 minute long. That being said, we are still incredibly proud of what we achieved, and it was cool seeing our drawing, animation, communication and time management skills develop throughout the project.
We were supposed to do a fundraiser in school where we would show the animation to a paying audience, however because of the quality drop from what we expected, we decided against the fundraiser as we thought that the animation wasn’t worth paying to see.
If we were to do this project again, we would absolutely allocate more time to the animation process and create a more robust storyboard to create a piece that feels more “finished”.
What did we get out of it? For starters we gained a more in depth understanding of the animation process, and how much time it takes. Because of this, it necessitated improved time management as we balanced animating with our summer coursework, holidays and hanging out with friends. Looking back, doing the challenge gave us more confidence as we needed to share our ideas within the team and those in the Mark Evison Foundation and also present our animation to an audience.
