Their story, in their words…
Our project for the Mark Evison Foundation was to create an inclusive culture day for our year 12 cohort where we aimed to ensure the diversity of our sixth form is proudly showcased through many ways such as dressing up in traditional attire. In order to do so, we devised different ways we could learn about other cultures through fun and insightful activities.
One of the activities included a crafts table where Japanese origami and Mexican Papel Picado could be learnt and made. We printed out instructions of how to do the crafts and the incredible history behind them both. Everyone created amazing origami and many bonded over their love for arts and crafts and seemed to have a great time. Furthermore, we hosted a games table of Cards, Uno and Snakes and Ladders. These are all games that are widely known and played however many do not know of their origin and history and so we also printed out information which many people found remarkably interesting because they did not expect certain games to originate in their countries. For example, playing cards originated in China around the 9th century which seemed to be an unexpected fact. These ways we were able to incorporate learning into exciting activities where everyone could unwind from the stress we have had from exams and starting our university applications.
On the day of the event, we transformed our sixth form area with decorations of balloons and flag bunting. In order for everyone to proudly showcase and express their incredible attire, we created a backdrop where pictures could be taken and organised a runway for everyone to take part in. In terms of our main activity (the cultural day quiz and a range of games as a year group) the positive attitude and willingness of everyone to participate created an enjoyable and successful event. This created a lively environment which remained all throughout the day and allowed the entire day to be a huge triumph. We also held a henna stall where we had two volunteers applying henna: this was a huge contributor towards our donations. To raise donations, we also sold raffle tickets to students and teachers and created gift hampers filled with delicious snacks from around the world for the lucky winners of the raffle!
Despite the challenges we encountered, the team worked together with dedication and resilience to ensure the Culture Day was a success. Every effort went towards our aim of creating an inclusive, welcoming and engaging environment where everyone felt valued and had the opportunity to celebrate and experience different cultures. We are endlessly grateful to the Mark Evison Foundation pushing us out of our comfort zones and supporting us to host an unforgettable day for our year group.
This challenge has left us with lifelong skills like problem solving, by effectively and efficiently responding to obstacles we faced. As well as organisation and planning skills, which were developed through responsibilities like coordinating activities and preparing resources. We have learnt the significance of teamwork and clear communication to ensure that our day ran smoothly. Our proudest achievement was raising money through our culture day, as we do not have any prior experience of raising donations, which will go back to the Mark Evison Foundation so they can continue supporting young people like us to face challenges and develop amazing skills like we have.
