Ben Macdui & Cairn Lochan

Their story, in their words…

Supported by the Mark Evison Foundation, our group embarked on a challenging 4-day hike in Cairngorm National Park. Despite facing practical difficulties, we embraced the opportunity and gained valuable experiences.

Throughout the trip, we encountered obstacles. Dan fell ill, Shobon was fatigued, and we lost a bag. However, we adapted our plans and set up camp earlier for Dan’s well-being. While searching for the lost bag, I crossed paths with a missing hiker named Theo. We offered him assistance and shared our campsite.

On the second day, debates arose about continuing the hike. Dan chose to return home, while Shobon and I pressed on, forming new friendships along the way. We adjusted our route and made significant progress, marvelling at the beauty of Loch Avon and Loch Etchachan.

Day three presented its own challenges, including Shobon losing his sleeping mat. However, the breathtaking scenery made the hardships worthwhile. Reaching the summit of Ben Macdui filled me with a profound sense of freedom and awe. We befriended fellow hikers and shared part of the journey with them.

On the final day, we made a quick trek to the ski centre, boarded a bus to Aviemore, and ultimately returned to London. Reflecting on the experience, the entire journey proved to be an incredible opportunity and a memorable adventure. We eagerly anticipate tackling the original hike once we complete our A-levels.

In summary, the hike in Cairngorm National Park tested us physically and emotionally, but it provided us with valuable lessons, unforgettable moments, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of nature.
