Their story, in their words…
Over the course of 5 days, we attempted to bike from Inverness to Dunnet Head – the most northern point of mainland Britain. A journey of around 200 miles, we would be going way out of our comfort zone.
Unfortunately on our very first day, the weather forecast was indicating stormy weather and heavy rain. We had no choice but to take the train for a few stops to make it to our campsite early before the rain would set in. Unfortunately this means that our trip was really only Dingwall to Dunnet Head!
The next few days went significantly better and we were really able to take in the gorgeous Scottish scenery and appreciate just how remote the landscape was. The worst part of the trip overall was definitely the camping, having to unpack and repack all our things every day really took a toll on us and took off a lot of valuable time. It was certainly worth it for the location of our campsites as each of them had brilliant scenery and amazing sunsets.
Our last night took place in a proper dedicated campsite, the most northern campsite on the mainland to be precise. It really felt incredibly rewarding as the owner was happy to cook us warm food for both dinner and breakfast. The arrival at the end of our trip filled us with a huge sense of joy and relief, we had finally made it after an incredibly hard effort, through rain, wind and sun. Overlooking the sea and up to the distant Orkney islands really made us proud of what we had achieved. The trip had really taught us perseverance above all else, when the going got tough we just had to keep on going and being Scotland, there were plenty of hills where we really struggled!
What really pushed us over those hills, was the reward of being able to speed down the other side and just enjoy the scenery. Through what kind of food to buy for each day and where we would find our campsite, it’s safe to say that our teamwork and problem solving skills were really put to the test. And whilst we certainly didn’t love every minute of the trip, it sure is something that both of us will look back on as a really different experience.
