Hiking from Carshalton to Brighton

Their story, in their words…

Our challenge involved our group walking to Brighton.

At the beginning, we were smoothly able to navigate our way through the map, by reading the map and following it through accurately.

From Carshalton to Redhill, our journey involved carefully following our planned walking route and ensuring we weren’t getting lost in the wrong direction. We were not physically drained yet and were able to successfully manage our time. Throughout the challenge, there were some disagreements on the direction and route we should take. However, we were able to resolve this issue by calmly talking and reaching a joint agreement.

Another problem we were faced with was getting a bit physically tired the longer we walked. We were able to overcome this problem by taking breaks when needed in between – sometimes taking longer breaks than planned to regain our energy.

Our feelings for this challenge varied, since at the beginning we were feeling confident but nervous, as we were unaware of the possible problems we might face during this challenge. But we were able to overcome this nerve-wracking feeling by following the correct route and understanding the small mistakes we were making. For example, at one point, a minor disagreement arose on what we thought was the right way. At first, we took the opposite route but soon realised and were able to change it.

Most importantly, we knew that this challenge would make us stronger and enhance some key skills, such as time management, communication and problem solving skills. We were able to learn and develop such vital skills throughout this opportunity, which will help us as we turn into young adults.
