Their story, in their words…
We planned and provided year 12 with a Sports Day with activities from primary school sports days post exams to allow students to relive childhood memories as well as relax after the stress of our end of year exams. We played games such as egg and spoon race, three-legged race, tug of war, sack races and relay races. In addition, we provided drinks, snacks and music for people attending.
When planning this event, we made an itinerary of activities we wanted to do as well as making a price list of all the finances we would need for equipment, food and drink. We also carried out a risk assessment to ensure that this event was safe and that we would not leave our peers open to any harm at our event. Since this was a Sports Day, we had a first aid kit on hand at the event. However, we were met with a few issues regarding the date we could do the event. Initially, we wanted to host the sports day after our end of year exams in June but had to do it early due to teacher strikes which meant that we had to do a lot of last-minute preparation due to having less time to set things up.
Despite this, we had a very good turnout; many students were eager to join in as well as teachers. We initially planned on not charging an entry fee; however, after careful consideration we decided to charge £1 for students and £2 for members of staff.
It was great because it was a nice way to bring the year group together to have fun and relive some stress after long months of studying and exams.
We were able to improve our teamwork, leadership and social skills greatly as well as being able to have fun and enjoy ourselves with our peers during the event. In addition, we were able to improve our organisation and time keeping skills as we had to work under a strict time schedule as well as working efficiently under time pressure. Overall, we benefited greatly from this experience.
