Their story, in their words…
Day 1, we got there on the campsite at Glen Nevis at sunset and set up our camp and explored the area of the river and the forests, since it was getting darker, we went back to our camp and settled in to sleep, we had lots of fun playing games in the tent. It was funny that people that were set near us were getting quite frustrated and told us to go sleep.
Day 2, we cleaned ourselves up and we made breakfast and got our gear to hike Ben Nevis, we climbed Ben Nevis Mountain following the routes correctly through the maps, there was already a route made for us so we didn’t need to use our compasses and navigation skills explored the waterfalls and the massive lake. The whole hike took us 10 hours to climb (there and back). As we were going back down the mountain sun was starting to set so we started telling each other silly stories yet funny. As we reached the bottom again, we headed back to the campsite and cleaned ourselves up as there was a shower, laundry and dish cleaning spot at the campsite which made living there much easier after we made dinner on our portable stove, it was a hell of an experience as we learned how to cook while in nature. After we ate, we cleaned up everything and settled down in our tents as it was getting dark. There are a lot of bugs and mosquitos, really hated that part.
Day 3, since we completed the main mission, to climb Ben Nevis, we decided to explore the whole of Ben Nevis, we got our gear and map, and we across the road and went straight. We had our compasses and we decided to go east, and it was going along the road. We then found this wild forest and we entered it, and explored it as it looked awesome, we were following the maps closing by using compasses. For example, we used these navigation skills to get across the forest. We left early in the morning so we could get back before night falls, managing our time correctly and efficiently.
The rest of the days at Ben Nevis was similar to Day 3, as we just did a lot of exploring and had fun, for example we went for a swim in the river.
The hikes were very enjoyable and quite tough, but we managed to push through. Also, the hikes took up majority of our day, and we managed to explore a lot of other things such as a massive forest, highland cattle’s, sheep, and even dears. This was a very amazing experience.
One very significant skill that we improved was teamwork, without our teamwork we would have had nothing done. Everything we did, we did it as a team and we managed to learn a lot from this experience such as navigation skills, cooking skills with lack of ingredients (the food turn out to be amazing), and wildlife skills. We were responsible for each thing, and we stuck to our responsibilities and if anything went wrong, we solved it as a team.
We had a very nice time there; the bugs and mosquitos might’ve made the experience a bit harder but that was just a hardship that we managed to endure. We had a lot of energy throughout this trip. We managed our food really good. There was also a small shop at the campsite where we managed to get some meat and souvenirs. It was like this campsite had everything we needed. We had lots or laughs and lots of arguments, but it was all fun. We were excited to go back home but we did want to stay a bit longer. We had lots of laughs on the way back.
We had gained a lot from this trip such as a new experience with our best friends while learning how to take responsibility and be independent.
