Their story in their words…
After the mark evison foundation came to our school, we immediately knew that we wanted to work on an architecture related project to prepare us for our future aspirations.
We chose to design and build a small scale model of a modern home inspired by geometric shapes. We began to brainstorm ideas, initially using origami to inspire our design. We also did some research into the design process of the Sydney Opera House to get an idea about how architects actually go about designing a building. After several rounds of potential ideas, we eventually settled on simplistic design which involved three cylinders of decreasing size stacked on top of each other. We also incorporated the idea of the land and the building combining by situating the lower cylinder so that it is built into a hill. We also designed an interior, deciding how the space would actually function as a home.
Once we had settled on our design, it was time to decide on materials to build the model and we visited the 3-D model shop as advised by the foundation. Then, we did some calculations to figure out how much material we would need based on the scale of the model.
We then spent a few months building the model, which proved more challenging than expected since there were aspects of the design which we hadn’t properly considered how they would translate to a three dimensional (small scale) house, for example during the making process, we decided the windows would be too large to allow for the amount of walls that would need to be inside the rooms in order to divide them into the sections laid out in the floor plans we put together for the interior.
However, after overcoming various challenges along the way, we have successfully designed and built a model which we are both very proud of. During this process, we have learned how to develop ideas, how to consider both form and function and strike a compromise between the two, as well as improving how we communicate our individual ideas and make decisions as a team. We are incredibly happy with the final result and are confident that this learning experience has been extremely beneficial to prepare us for the next stages where we both plan on studying architecture at university.
