Their story, in their words…
For my Mark Evison foundation project, I created an architectural model of a possible future house. It was inspired by more modern architectural styles and classical greek architecture including a balcony, varied floor lengths and electrical components (fairy lights) in order to make it look as realistic as possible.
I created this using model making materials such as plywood, foam boards, and acetone sheets from a model shop. There were a couple difficulties when creating the model such as working with the plywood and carefully cutting out the foundation.
It was essential that the foundations were accurate and after multiple times using a utility knife I was able to cut it out successfully. I also found that when attaching the lights to the ceilings of the model, they were very bright and were creating small dots of light that could be seen through the materials.
So I had to use another layer of foam to cover up the dots that the light was creating. However, overall I found that the model turned out to be quite successful, because the foam boards were very easy to work with and I thought the lights would be my biggest issue but I found an efficient way to attach them which resulted in a great model.
This was my first time developing a design and working on creating a model and I found the experience to be very rewarding. I was assigned to explore a model shop in London as part of my project which I found quite helpful because it allowed me to gain more knowledge about the materials I was using and to become more familiar with better quality materials that really make a difference to the model.
I learnt a lot about how to plan effectively, work with different materials and manage my time in order to complete the project. I’m very grateful for the opportunity.
