Their story, in their words…
We have made an interview-styled short film about youth culture and friendship within London, but this was not the original plan. The original idea was to make a short film on the same topic but in a more scripted way.
The processes started by coming up with ideas for the film. There were many differnet ideas that ranged from topics around mental health to topics like music. We decided on the topic of youth culture in the hopes of challenging the negative representations of the youth of London. we had planned to do this though a character called promise who leave her oyster card at home before heading to work, forcing her to walk to get there. We had made a list of actors as well as locations that we could film in. we had then started script writing, and this was time consuming, so we decided to write and rehearse at the same time. This was great because it allowed us to make quick changes to the script based on input from the actors so the language used wouldn’t feel forced and the actors felt comfortable. However, a challenge arose during this time just before the easter holiday which is when we had planed to film. Certain deadlines were not met and the time-consuming nature of the project resulted in nothing being filmed and actors not being able to be a part of the film due to other commitments. This was frustrating and at a point we had wanted to stop the project completely until we had the idea of making “I am so London “. The new plan would take much less time, could be film in school and truly resembles the main idea of our whole project. Throughout this new plan we were able to hear from younger people about their friendships and their views on what actually happens in London. we had finish filming within a week and had started editing. The film was shown within school on the 3rd of July.
What was learnt?
The main skills learnt were soft skills such as effective teamwork and collaboration as well as planning and organisation.
