We hosted a wine tasting at the Cavalry and Guards Club, with a Master of Wine, Derek Smedley, and wine supplied by Berry Bros and Rudd. Sir Andrew Motion, ex-poet-laureate, spoke at the dinner following the wine tasting.

Open garden @ 118 Court Lane, Dulwich
The garden at Court Lane was opened to the public, with tea and cake served to over 100 visitors, raising funds for the Foundation.

Many of our former award winners joined us for two focus group sessions in May and June to give us feedback on the awards process. The second session, in June, was followed by a barbecue also attended by some of the Foundation’s supporters.

Lord Richard and Lady Pippa Dannatt hosted a small fund-raising dinner, which included a private view of the Crown Jewels, a tour of the Queens House, a wonderful dinner, and finally watching the Ceremony of the Keys.

Rugby with the Honourable Artillery Company
Saracens played rugby with team Stade Francais at the HAC grounds, with the Foundation as the named charity. Volunteers, many of them Mark’s old Army friends, rattled buckets and worked hard to raised funds for the MEF. An auction of promises was held at two dinners in the evening, which raised substantial funds for the Foundation. Thank you to Saracens for this.

Raffle of a day on a sailing ship
We were given a wonderful opportunity to sail for day in the Solent for 12 people, to raise money for the Foundation. We made it available as a single prize raffle, with a limited draw of 200 tickets.

Held at the Great Hall, Dulwich College with live music from two bands, drinks, canapés, a raffle and a fantastic auction of promises, auctioned by Christie’s auctioneer Noel Annesley. Over two hundred people came, including some of Mark’s fellow officers just back from Afghanistan.

The OC Music Society held its annual concert at Charterhouse in aid of the Foundation. Gerard le Feuvre came to play Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra, Op 33, and a very touching work of his own, in memory of Mark: as well there was a lovely programme of Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Dvorak, well attended by an enthusiastic audience.

Non-stop cycle ride
London to Paris cycled Olly Hicks, Jack Mann, Charlie Church and Rufus Gordon-Dean cycled non-stop from Marble Arch to L’Arc de Triomphe in 22 hours. It was a tough trip, raining all day.

Scottish Highlands walk
Foundation supporters were invited to climb Munro Geal-charn in the Drumochter Pass, Scotland, with supporters of the charity DecAid. DecAid, a charity set up to raise funds for soldiers from Afghanistan and to mark 10 years of conflict there, dedicated this Munro to Mark and each one to each soldier lost.

Team Indian Ocean 3100
Tom Kelly, James Kayll and brothers Ollie and Ed Wells took part in the toughest rowing race in the world, The Indian Ocean Rowing Race, to become the first fours boat to ever cross the Indian Ocean unsupported. They set out from Geraldton, Western Australia on a route which took them over 3100 nautical miles across the Indian Ocean to the paradise island of Mauritius. So far they have raised nearly £50,000 for four chosen charities, including the Foundation. Discover more about their story here.

Ross Lydall, journalist with the Evening Standard, ran the Virgin London marathon succesfully raising for the Foundation.

Jem Mcilveen Jungle Marathon
Jem McIlveen went  through training at Sandhurst and Brecon with Mark. ‘He was fantastic company through the arduous conditions of training and a truly inspirational character’. Jem and a friend named Gordon MacGregor competed in the Jungle Marathon 2010, to honour the memory of both Mark and another friend Dougie Dalzell (a late Coldstream Guards officer). The event itself was a 200km race over 6 stages. It ass run along a similar format as the Marathon des Sables but held in the Brazilian Amazon.

Boxing
William Waddell Dudley, 28, Stewart Cruickshank, 40, Kevin Carlier, 55, and Liam Tarf, 27, trained one night a week at Factory East gym in Bow.

These four ‘City boys’ raised money for the Foundation and another local charity. They had 12 weeks to prepare for the six-minute bouts – in front of a 1,000-plus crowd at The Troxy in Commercial Road on October 21. They are being trained by Joe Pirotta, 28, an amateur boxer with 10 years’ experience.

William said: ‘It ties in with what Mark’s personality was like. He was up for any challenge. He was just such a nice guy, and so easy-going, always positive. It was such a waste of a life.’

Elizabeth Evison and Emma Johnson ran the Cardiff half–marathon with 11,000 others, the biggest road race in Wales, the course flat and fast with amazing scenery. Both achieved personal best times.

Ian King completed the event on 2nd August 2009 in 2:29:58 hours, smashing his target time of 2:45 and just sneaking inside the Elite qualifying time of 2:30.

Three peaks
Emma Johnson took time off her busy hospital round to complete the three peaks, the three highest mountains in the U.K, on 1 July 2009. She did it in just over 26 hours, which is within the recommended time, an achievement she is very pleased and proud of (Ben Nevis 1344m – 5 hr, Scafell Pike 978m – 3.5hr, Snowdon 1085m – 4.5hr). She raised the real first boost to the Foundation.
